It is with great sadness that I am learning about the passing of Sir Chris Dobson, Master of St John's College in Cambridge. Condolences to all his family.
Prof. Andrea Belvedere – Master of Collegio Ghislieri Pavia
I had the pleasure of meeting the Master here in Japan in 2012, when the College Choir was touring.
He wrote me a very kind letter afterwards, thanking me for my help with the tour (although I had not really done very much).
He also encouraged me to get in touch with the College Development Office, and this enabled me to reconnect with the College in ways that I otherwise would not have.
It is indeed a very sad moment in the College’s history; yet we can also be thankful for a full and brilliant life well lived.
Rest in Peace, Master.

As many others have already expressed, I will remember Chris not only for his brilliant mind, but also for his immensely kind heart. Chris’ passing is a tremendous loss. He was a wonderful mentor to so many young scientists, his legacy will surely live on for many years to come. I will be forever grateful for his support and the opportunity to have known him. My thoughts are with Mary, Richard and William at this very sad time.

Reading the news of Chris' death was a huge shock to many, including myself. No word would ever describe the pain. Knowing him and working with him as a postdoc for 7 years was one the greatest privileges of my life. My heart will never forget him - he simply took part of it forever. I will speak of him to my children. I will tell them how because of him I was able to excel as a scientist and at the same time have the opportunity to be a mom. He was a great inspiration to many. He set an example of helping others and doing things t.h.e b.e.s.t. w.a.y possible. He was exceptional, exemplary. My his soul rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Chris many times. On every occasion I was inspired by his energy, his brilliant ideas, his integrity, his frankness and his humility. He made an enormous difference to the College and he leaves a legacy that is exemplary. It is hard to overstate how much I valued his advice, friendship and encouragement, and I will miss him greatly. Even when I saw him a few months ago, deep in to his treatment for cancer, I was overwhelmed by the time he gave me and his acceptance of his situation. He was determined to make the most of every day he had left. My warmest best wishes and huge condolences to Mary and the family.

Professor Sir Chris Dobyns was a truly remarkable scientist and Master. While Chris and Mary made the Master's Lodge their home, they opened it warm heartedly to all in St. John's. It was a privilege to have met Chris. My thoughts are with Mary, their family, and to all at College and academia who feel this tremendous loss.

I will never forget the care, consideration and respect that Chris had for each and every person he encountered. From joining him and Mary for breakfast at the May Ball to receptions in the Master’s Lodge, Chris and Mary were always a joy to be with. He gave so much to the college through his involvement with the JCR, May Ball, societies, sports and a dozen other parts of college life. I will always associate my time and experiences at St John’s with Professor Sir Christopher Dobson. Thoughts are with his family at this terribly saddening time.

Cambridge has lost a towering figure. As an internationally distinguished scientist, he added a new dimension to the Department of Chemistry's work with his studies of protein misfolding. As Master of St John's, he was endlessly courteous and hospitable. As a friend, he was kind and thoughtful. It was a privilege to have known adn worked with him, and I am among thousands who mourn his loss. My deepest sympathy goes to Mary, Richard and William.

There are many others who can speak more eloquently about Chris as a researcher and as Master. I remember him particularly for his kindness when my wife died a couple of years ago. This illustrated his humanity and interest in people. He was always approachable and interested and this also made him such a great leader of his research teams. My deepest condolences go out to Mary, Richard, & William.
