A wonderful supervisor, who wearily put up with me insisting on rowing (among myriad other sports) while doing my PhD, but never tried to convince me not to. He'll be sorely missed.
Jane Allison, 2004
We would like to express our deepest sympathy on the passing of Sir Christopher. We got the great experiences and friends through an exchange program. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Mai,
Thank you for all that you did for St John’s College, Cambridge and the wider community. We appreciated all the support that you gave to the Catering Department over the years, and also to our families. Our very best wishes go to the rest of the family at this time

so many thoughts...

knowing and working with chris was among the most enjoyable times and highlights the wonderful aspects of life and being a scientist.

often, chris and i would find ourselves, often in japan or elsewhere in asia, being the first two in line for breakfast, having woken up ~ 2am. these early morning chats were a joy in themselves, but as well led to collaborations that continue fruitfully to this day. of course, doing skype and other forms of communication was often a charming challenge with cambridge!!

another memory is from the may ball at johns, amusingly held in june. for those of you who have participated, this is a remarkable end-of-the-year event and because it goes through the night, the tricks from mary and chris to "stay up" all night were key in appearing at sunrise at the survivor's photo! moreover, it was quite the moment when chris showed us our guest room and mentioned that the most recent guest was the dalai lama. many of you have probably noticed how this had "enlightened" me!

chris, we will deeply miss you.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Christopher and his wife with a small group of my Cambridge contemporaries when he hosted us in March 2016. it was a fairly brief encounter but they were kind and gracious hosts to us, most if not all of whom were strangers to them - I had come from Dublin. I was touched by the occasion and remembered him vividly. I share the grief of so many that someone of his personal quality and great professional and academic eminence has been taken from us so soon. I would like to convey my sincere sympathy to the College.

In addition to his great intellect, Chris Dobson was the most approachable Master I can remember. A wonderful man, lost to us far too early.
Julian Comrie, 1956
I met Sir Christopher just for two hours when filming his interview for the Czech Television, but it was one of those meetings which stay in your heart for ever. Sir Christopher was one of the most impressive people I have met in my life, yet incredibly humble and kind. He talked much more about his students (with so much love and passion) than about his own achievements. I am honoured I could meet him. My deepest condolences to Sir Christopher's family.

Conversations and interactions with Chris are a distinctly memorable part of my PhD and scientific life to date - they were helpful, inspirational and just generally pleasant on a personal level. How much Chris cared about people, and supported and helped them, always amazed me. Chris will be dearly missed by so many students and scientists.

I never met Chris but greatly admired his pioneering work towards a solution to the puzzle of neurodegeneration. My daughter-in-law, Dr. Leila Luheshi , was a former group member who spoke very highly of him as both brilliant scientist and supervisor. She also respected his values as a wonderful gentleman. He will be a tremendous loss to all who knew him and of course St. John's. He leaves a wonderful legacy and was an example to all of us. With the very deepest sympathy.
Dr. Mervyn Thompson [1972]
Chris was surely the perfect Master. He was obviously academically distinguished and lent the role huge gravitas, but he also interested himself in every member of St. John’s College. He always took time out of his busy schedule to speak to students, about all of whom he very genuinely cared. He was totally supportive of the choir, which meant a huge amount to all of its members.

Chris was wonderful to spend time with, always ready to crack a joke and flash a cheeky grin. With all the pressures of a Cambridge term, it was a comfort to have someone at the head of the college who never took life too seriously. My deepest condolences to Mary, Richard and William. Chris will be sorely missed and fondly remembered, and I hope this can bring some comfort at such a difficult time.
