I have a comforting mental picture of Chris walking his dog along the river. He was as kind, and generously accessible, as he was distinguished. It is hard to imagine the college without him.

I first knew Chris when we were both young fellows of LMH and never forgot his happy and humorous presence. It was a joy to re-connect at St John's. I'll never forget him gently persuading Alfred Brendel to "just touch the keys" of the piano in the Master's lodgings when Brendel was Humanitas Professor.
What a loss.
Mary Jacobus
Saddened by the loss of our esteemed Master and condolences to all at St John’s.
Professor Dodson’s inclusiveness and kindness to scholars like myself from the Antipodes contributed to making my Visiting Fellowship in 2007 a particularly memorable experience.

Sir Christopher Dobson went above and beyond in his role at the college. Between opening up his home for recitals and hosting the Grad dinners in Hall, I had the opportunity to speak with him quite a bit during my 3 years at college, and he was always so thoughtful in the way he asked about my sustainable food systems research and rowing. He was very encouraging about it. His leadership was truly impressive.

As a young Americancoming to England and St. John’s in the tumultuous exciting year 1967, my experience was and is unforgettable. My condolences to the family of the Master and to the whole community of us who love the College.

I express my deepest sympathies for the loss of Sir Christopher, to his family and to all St John's college family. I attended the college dinner on the 7th of September after a 15 year absense from Cambridge and England. It was quite emotional for me to be back after so much time and felt proud to see that the college is still blooming and will continue to do so because of the love of the people that belong to the college. People like Sir Christopher. Rest in peace Sir Christopher. May your memory live forever

This is a great loss for St John's. I only had the privilege of speaking to Chris once but I was struck by his humility and gentle manner. It was an honour to have had him as Master during my time in college.

Professor Mike Heffernan
Thank you, Prof. Dobson, for being an illuminating, empathic and warm leader to our College during my time at St John's. It has been such a privilege to know you as Master, Professor and an incredibly brilliant and accomplished scientist. This is a huge loss for the College, the University and the entire scientific community. My most sincere condolences to Mary, the family and the Johnian family.
