It was with heartfelt sadness that I learned the news of Sir Christopher Dobson's passing. I remembered him as a scientist gentleman. Despite his many accomplishments and high stature he was modest and humble which made him approachable by ordinary students. I fondly remember his generosity and kindness in opening his home at the Master's Lodge to musical concerts. He truly served the community of St. John's College and created spaces to strengthen the social bonds of its membership.

Chris Dobson was a great master of the College. He made it his own and was unfailingly kind to us very old alumni who returned.

I feel very honored to have had Professor Dobson as the Master of John's for my two years there. He was always friendly, accessible, and a joy to be around. He was a true leader of our college, unfailingly generous and wholeheartedly invested in his students and staff. St. John's has lost a friend and an inspiration, but his remarkable legacy will resonate through our college and out in the world indefinitely.

Professor Dobson's kind, genuine and caring spirit brought so much joy and meaning to all Johnians who had the privilege to know him. I for one feel incredibly grateful to have been under the guidance of our Master. He will always be remembered for his inspirational speeches and profound intellect and I personally will always consider him a role model, leaving a legacy amongst his students, who can aspire to follow his encouragement for us to make this world a better place.

Sir Christopher understood the power of his impact with a keen sense of humility, and respect for others. I will never forget his kind words of encouragement, coupled with his example as a leader and scholar. I am happy to have become a Johnian, having crossed paths with an incredible life and lasting spirit.

Not only Master, but in so many ways also Father of the College and its alumni. Chris Dobson fostered a sense that we all belong and will continue throughout life to belong, to a great institution that is also very personal, welcoming and inclusive and of which we all hold dear. Quite remarkable that he was able to couple what seemed a ubiquitous presence in College and involvement with its every aspect, with his formidable academic and research life, which reflected so proudly on the College. We will all miss him and remember him as an outstanding person, none more so than his loving family, for whom we all have the greatest sympathy.
Philip Paxman, matriculated 1960
Chris was the finest Master the staff and students at St John's could have wished for. His support for everyone in all their endeavours, academic or otherwise, was truly incredible. I will never forget his kindness and sense of humour, his support for the choir, Christmas parties in the lodge, and his love for Mary.

The College and the University have lost a true friend and an inspirational man and leader, whose work and consideration for all knew no bounds and whose enthusiasm for work, sport, music and most importantly people was unlimited.
