This very sad news is a blow to the whole of the John's community. Chris Dobson was an inspiration to so many of us. He was kind and compassionate and and very warm in his relationships with all. We were so privileged to have spent an evening at High Table with him and Mary - to whom we send our sincere condolences.

Chris was the most supportive, kind, and inspirational Master I could ever have wished for. He cared about each individual student and really made an effort to get to know us and to show his interest in what we do. I was always very moved by his support of my musical activities and that he often went out of his way to be present at performance events. He will be very greatly missed.

Chris Dobson was an extraordinary man. He came to the College as a great scientist and director of research, and then took on the additional duties of the Mastership. His diligence and effectiveness in that role was remarkable: he realised the potential fund raising capacity of the College and set targets which will transform access. Within the College his exceptional courtesy and evident kindness and concern for others set a standard for all. The college has lost a great Master. The loss to his family must be hard to bear. They have all my sympathy.

My sincere condolences to Mary, Richard and William, as they face the tragic loss of Chris. I pray that they may find comfort in the knowledge that Chris was greatly admired throughout the whole College community - and indeed across the world. His life was full of accomplishment, and he will be remembered for many decades yet for his outstanding contribution to the furtherance of our understanding of the human condition.

Sincerely,

Rev Ian S. Rawley MA (Cantab) MTh (matric 1976)
