Please note we are no longer accepting submissions to the online condolence book.

My wife and I were both shocked to read the news about Sir Christopher’s death. I matriculated in 1952 so I never knew him as Master, but the Mistress of Girton spoke very warmly about him at the Girton Anniversary reunion in Edinburgh and my wife and I were very taken with the warmth and personal flavour that he gave to what could have been a very formal tea party at the St John’s weekend. We were given no hint of how desperately ill he must have been at the time. I would like to record my sympathy with his family, and with the wider College, over their sad loss.

Such a lovely and kind man. I always looked up to him while I was in the choir as a chorister and be always took the time to get to know us and talk to us. He will be sorely missed and the college won’t be the same without him. My condolences to the family.

I only met Sir Christopher at his garden tea parties prior to Johnian Dinners but greatly appreciated his
kindness and interest in my humble doings.

I'm deeply saddened by the news of the loss of Sir Christopher Dobson. I first met him in 2008 at the SBR garden Party in the Master's Garden and the last time in 2016 at an Alumni reception in San Francisco. In both occasions I was deeply impressed by his nice attitude, charisma and approachable manners. My thoughts are with his family and the entire College community.

We all feel poorer when a great man passes but doubly so when he has the great, warm and human character of Christopher Dobson

I was lucky enough to have been at St. John's while Prof. Dobson was the College Master. He had a charismatic aura and a personality that radiated nothing less than sheer excellence. My main interaction with him would happen at the Master's Lodge concert events, where he would make it a point to interact with as many graduates as possible. He was always very warm and approachable. I was also fortunate enough to hear his lectures, and even though my domain was far from his area of expertise, it was a real pleasure to hear about his research, all explained in an enchanting manner.

The loss of Prof. Dobson would undoubtedly leave a huge void at St. John's and in the lives of those that he touched. I can only be thankful for being a part of his life at college, no matter how small that may have been. I will always have fond memories of Prof. Dobson, who devoted a significant part of his working time for the welfare of the college. He will be deeply missed.

My deepest condolences to his wife, Mrs. Dobson, and his children.

My wife and I were very sad to hear of Sir Christopher’s death. We were always inspired by his talks on our all-too-rare visits to the College, and the welcoming atmosphere he created. He will be greatly missed.
