Please note we are no longer accepting submissions to the online condolence book.

Though I don't think Sir Christopher knew who we were, he happened to get caught chatting to my wife (Cheryl Smythe) and me on several Old Johnian events over the last few years, and was always welcoming, interesting, charming and humble. He was someone who made a big impression on close friends and brief acquaintances alike, and we will miss him.

Such a shock and so sad to lose such a great Master and caring person at his peak. All Johnians, past, present & future will miss him greatly. Sincerest condolences to Mary, Richard & William.

On the few occasions I got to speak to the Master, I could tell he was a man of compassion who deeply cared about those around him and I was always amazed at just how he made me feel at ease when speaking to him. His speeches were always inspiring, funny and made us feel proud to be part of St John's.

Thank you, for your dedication to the college and for inspiring countless generations. It's such a loss that he was taken so soon. My thoughts are with the family and those closest to him.

Professor Dobson was one of the genuine good guys. When I wrote to congratulate him on his knighthood he took the time & trouble to append his reply with a hand written apology that the brain protein research he was involved with would not realise results in time to help my wife's alzheimers. That is pure class ! I will miss him and send my love & prayers to his family. I will do my best to add my thoughts to the condolence book in the College later this week.

Chris was a brilliant scientist who cared deeply about people. His concern for the well being of all who served the College was inspirational.

I share the sorrow of the family and of St John's for the departure of Sir Christopher Dobson. I never had a chance to meet with him, but from what I heard he has been a great Master and a great human being
Giovanni Vaggi, Overseas Visiting Scholar 1997
May I recall that he was always courteous, friendly, approachable and a distinguished man. The College system of appointing the Master from among the Fellows was well supported by his term as Master.
Keith Mann, 1954.
Such sad news. Although I only met him a few times (during re-union visits back to College) he always struck me as a kind and decent man without a hint of pomposity or self regard. His dedication to the College was always to the fore. A sad loss to the College community and his family; condolences to both.
Dr Hugh Tooby (1979)
I only encountered Sir Christopher when he spoke at the Quincentenary celebrations at St Johns but his reputation created a charismatic aura which has done much to promote the College. He will be sorely missed.
