Sir Christopher Dobson was one of the most remarkable people I have had the honour of meeting. His unwavering interest in every aspect of College life, brilliant stories, inspirational speeches, profound respect and kindness, and all-round academic prowess will be deeply missed.

Met the Master as he came through Hong Kong. Typical Johnian so matter of fact with a good sense of humour you would never have guessed he was an eminent scientist. The timing of his passing brings to mind Ecclesiastes "There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless. 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun." Thankfully the Master did seem to "enjoy his life eat drink and be glad" and he possessed " joy " and that is a small compensation for this loss.

Chris was a towering figure: a creative and curious polymath, a committed public servant, humanitarian, and mentor to generations of his scientific successors. We will miss him enormously.

I never have the good fortune of meeting the Master in person, but now realise how big was my loss in not meeting him, if only just over coffee after dinner in the College. Having read more about him now, I know it is from people like him that SJC's contributions to the world, in education, scholarship and humanity, can be optimistically predicted for the next five centuries.

I was deeply sorry to hear the news. Such a loss to the family, the College and the University.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Chris's untimely death. I knew him well during the period when I was a Junior Research Fellow at the college and I had the utmost respect for him, both as a scientist and as a human being. It is a great loss for the college and for everyone who knew him. My sincere condolences to his family.

It was very sad to learn of the death of the College Master, Sir Christopher Dobson. It is quite a great loss to St. John's College Community, especially when he is still actively giving good leadership service in the College and the University. He will be really missed. My sympathy goes to his wife and two children.

A charming gentle giant whom Myriam and I had the privilege of meeting several times in recent years at alumni events in the college. We are saddened by the news but proud of his legacy - personal, academic and for the college. Our condolences to Mary.

I met Chris at an alumni event in Melbourne some years ago, and he left an indelible impression. A man of great intellect and warmth who was instantly able to connect with his audience. When he spoke with you, you felt as if nothing in that moment was more important to him.
