Sir Dobson will forever have a lasting impression on me not just as a world class contributor to the sciences, but first and foremost as a human with an amazing spirit. He loved welcoming students to his home and went out of his way to get to know each of us even though he was so busy. He even took the time to speak with my parents at graduation despite his many responsibilities on that day, which left a lasting impression on them as well. He was so good at putting people at ease. What will stay with me is that he didn’t care if you were a student or esteemed fellow, he treated everyone with equal respect, interest, and warmth. His young spirit will also stay with me...attending the burning of the boat and taking the survivor photo at the end of May Ball. I hope to carry his legacy forward in a tiny way by trying to emulate the warmth his created when meeting new people. He will be missed. My condolences to Dr Mary Dobson and her sons.

It was devastating to hear about Chris' passing, and I will miss him very greatly. What he has done for our community these past 18 years has been extraordinary. The individual support he somehow found time to give to so many Johnians was unique. My last two days have been filled with conversations remembering the help he gave to people whenever it was needed - a letter of recommendation, a connection, pastoral support, encouragement for a new society, pushing for funding. I will also never forget his joy for life, and his ability to bring happiness in all circumstances, be it simply with a joke when we were stressed, or - as in my case - a whispered 'Happy Birthday' as he graduated me in Senate House.

I shall always remember Sir Christopher's kind generosity when I was an Overseas Visiting Fellow during Lent Term 2010. He went out of his way to make me feel welcome and set such a fine tone for the college. His warm eyes and inclusive smile remain vivid in my memory of a wonderful term there at St. John's.

is one of the highlights of my annual summer in Cambridge.

It has been a privilege to work with Chris over the last seven years, an outstanding scientist and most importantly an exceptional person. I will dearly miss his unique ability to make one feel happy and empowered after every meeting.
Chris may you rest in peace. Your legacy and your love live on: in Cambridge, in science, and throughout the world, as such as been your impact.

Such a sad, sad loss!
A couple of years ago my wife and I were run into on the A14 en route to a donors' day. Our car was a a write-off. I emailed the organiser to apologise for our absence, in respose to which I had a personal signed message from the master, offering condolences. This from a busy man - such a lovely gesture! What a man!

Our deepest sympathy to Mary and the family. Chris is an inspiration and his death leaves a deep gap in so many places - family, college and the research community. The things that he built and developend will benefit so many for years to come.
