My deepest condolences to the family of Sir Christopher. I remember most keenly his kindness and amiability when I met him as a first year at John's.

I never had the privilege of meeting this great man, but always took great pleasure in reading about Sir Christopher's intellectual triumphs as well as his love for the college.

I lost my beloved Dad on the 29th of August, so I know what Sir Christopher's family must be going through at this time. My sincere condolences to his wife and children.

Liang and I were staying in St John's from 2007 until 2012, whilst doing our PhD degrees and received the 1st postdoc position in Cambridge. The memorial moments with Sir Christopher and Mary were still so fresh like happened recently: we chat happily in their kitchen during the Johnian's garden party held in Master's Garden; we celebrated the 500 years anniversary with all Johnians and our distinguished guests, Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness; we enjoyed the high table formal dinner with Sir Christopher when we returned back to Cambridge 2 years ago; we even choose John as the name of our son in memory of our greatest time in St John's.
It is a deep mourn for our family when heard of this sorrowful news; we are losing an instructor, a great friend, and a life-long mentor; however, he will still be with us as he always did, and will never be forgotten. May you rest in peace, Sir Christopher.

Dear Dr Mary Dobson and family,

I am sad to hear the news of Sir Christopher's passing, and regret that I never had the opportunity to meet him while he was Master of our College.

Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. No words are ever right in such circumstances, but I hope your and your family's joyous and fond memories of Sir Christopher bring some comfort during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Sir Christopher was a man of huge integrity and humility - it was a pleasure and an honour to know him.

I feel very lucky to have been at St John’s while Chris was Master. It was his opening address at the matriculation dinner that settled many of my (fairly significant) doubts about the college and the university. I had felt like an impostor up until that point, in an environment that was so different from my home in North Wales. He was kind, welcoming and funny. He will be missed by many, and my thought go out to his family and friends. Mewn cydymdeimlad
