I only met Sir Christopher and Lady Dobson on few occasions, and am very sorry to hear the sad news. Chris struck me as a congenial Master, completely at home with what he was doing and the demands on a many-sided life. My condolences go to the family and I hope to attend the Memorial.

Having suffered from a brush with cancer myself, which, however, has been healed based on a new approach to the illness, I can say that, as a alumnus, I would like to extend my deepest felt condolences to everyone who knew the Master of the College personally, in view of an untimely, and much too early end of life. May his much cherished legacy live on in the community!

I associate my time at St John's with Prof Dobson's stewardship of the college as the Master. He somehow unfailingly managed to convey extraordinary grace and kindness during the few times I met him. I lament his family's and our college's loss and hope that our unfading memories of him will carry us through this time.

I am so very sad to hear about the death of Chris Dobson. Such a fine man and Master. I recall that I went to a reunion of my old school, St Edward’s, Oxford, hosted by Chris and Mary Dobson at the Master’s Lodge. I can’t remember the date but it was early in his time as Master. I believe one of his sons had been a pupil there and that Chris and his wife were appreciative of what the school had done for his son. What impressed me was that Chris Dobson already knew who I was — that is, a Johnian who was an old boy of St Edward’s School. I remember also that we were invited to ‘have the freedom of his house’ — to look round it after lunch. The impression he gave was that ‘My wife and I are lucky enough to live in this lovely house — we want you to share some of our pleasure'. An enlightened and generous gesture.

Then we look at his remarkable achievements both as a ground-breaking scientist and as Master. As a former headmaster I can only marvel at his ability to know individually all the Fellows and undergraduates.

My thoughts go to his wife Mary and to Richard and William.

May he rest in peace.

Chris was a wonderful supporter of my film work in College. He was an innovator who encouraged council to allow me to be project the mapping film "The Return of Harry lime" onto the Bridge of Sighs. He and Dr Mary Dobson even came out in a punt on a chilly September evening in 2016 to see the film for themselves. I shall dedicate the film in Chris's memory - a wonderfully kind and wise man from whom we can all learn a lot and who makes us proud to be members of the College
