It was an honour to have met with Sir Christopher on a number of occasions in New York and at the College. As a fellow scientist I admire all that he has accomplished in his life. Most of all he was a great human being.

A great loss to John's, Cambridge and scientific community overall. It was pleasure to be undergraduate whilst he was Master and touching to see him only a few months ago at a garden party when returning to dine in hall. My condolences to Lady Mary and his family.

Words cannot express my sadness at the news of Chris' death. He will forever remain in my memory as a kind, warm and genuine man who was able to welcome and inspire me as a rather untypical late scholar. I witnessed his considerate regard and sensitivity to me throughout my time at St. John's. This has left me with deep respect for his ability to see through barriers to learning and participation - his easy, quiet manner ensured all felt welcome and valued. I am proud to have had the privilege of knowing him and will hold his memory dear.

Chris was an incredibly open and warm person and a wonderful College Master (I started my PhD at St John's in 2012). I had lots of nice chats with him at various College events, when he always took a genuine interest in the niche specialisms of every student. I will particularly remember the music concerts he put on at the Lodge every few weeks, making that beautiful building accessible to the whole College community.

It is terribly sad to hear the news that Chris has passed away. His has been a remarkable contribution to the field of Chemical Biology, which will live on in the work he has produced and the many people who he has inspired along the way. As others have noted, Chris was always very kind and considerate in interactions with others in the field, and I remember him well from my early days in Oxford through to listening in awe at lectures he delivered over the years. Chris had a fantastic ability to see the big picture in the work that he undertook, which why it has had such impact.
Rest in peace.
