When Chris and Mary arrived in Cambridge, I was the then Director of Music at St John's. They immediately connected with all aspects of college life and, in particular, the college chapel, the choir and the offering of daily Evensong which they would attend on a regular basis. It was Chris' ability to listen and be supportive to all who were in his presence which made him a remarkable man, intellect, inspirational leader, mentor, friend and a very special Master of St John's College. He was proud of its members, students, fellows and traditions. He knew how to bring a community with hugely different, even polarised, views into a coherent, forward thinking institution. He managed that alongside his extraordinary work as a scientist. His legacy is simply remarkable. He will be greatly missed by us all and our hearts go out to Mary, Richard and William at this very sad time. RIP.

It is with great sadness that I am learning about the passing of Sir Chris Dobson, Master of St. John's College in Cambridge. I was only able to have a few brief conversations with him, most notable over desert at the Ante Portam Latinum Feast.
Sir Chris left a deep impression on me with his incredible generosity, his eloquence and his humor. I am eternally thankful to Sir Chris for giving me the opportunity to spend this summer term at St. John's and for opening up a whole new world to me.
My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. May the loving memory see his family and friends through to better days.
With my deepest sympathy,

A very, very special person, a dearest friend, a rare and exciting mind, the most generous spirit...the world seems a lesser place without him. Everyone's heart will go out to Mary and the boys in this untimely and tragic loss.
Juliet Mitchell
I want to express my sympathy first to the family and then to the College. We have lost an individual of exceptional talents and it's a tragedy he has been taken away from us - long before his time.
Dr Barry O. Hughes (1959-1965)
Very sad to read this dreadful news. Some days, it's very difficult to Believe and when someone like Chris passes away, so unexpected, so soon, it's clearly one of these days. God, you had your reasons for calling him so soon, please bring some strength, courage and comfort to Mary, her sons and the St John’s community.
Albert Galy
The Master and a truly great man, who inspired us to do better.

I find it difficult to put into words the dismay I feel that Sir Christopher is no longer with us. To me, he was the beating heart of the College - an exemplary scholar and an immensely caring man. I am sure that everyone who came into contact with him felt that their lives had been enriched. My heart goes out to Dr Mary, Richard and William.
Dr Colin Butler (1962)
His generosity of spirit and warmth shone out. He was also a wonderful friend to my mother, Juliet Mitchell and stepfather Jack Goody.

I only met Sir Christopher a few times and he was always kind and welcoming . He will be missed by many whose lives he touched directly or indirectly. My thoughts are with his family.

Please accept our deepest condolences. We had the honour of meeting Chris on numerous occasions during his visits to Hong Kong in recent years. He was a pleasure to be with - humorous, self-deprecating and warm to a fault. This is such terribly sad news. But what a legacy he leaves.
