It was an honour, and a pleasure, to have known Sir Christopher. He was a man who had a remarkable ability to see detail and the overview at the same time.

I would like to extend my sympathy to Dr Mary and his family at this sad time.
Gus Guest, 1964-67
I will never forget how kind Sir Dobson was the first time I ever spoke to him. He was thinking of ways to help me with my career and people he could put me in touch with. I spent a lot of time working on the May Ball and he was also always there to help and support the Committee whenever he could. The college has done great things with him as master and my thoughts are with his family.

While I never met Sir Christopher I greatly admire his wonderful academic work and his great leadership of SJC.

As a fellow cancer sufferer I know how difficult the last few months must have been.

My sincere condolences to Mary and all his family.

I remember one of Chris Dobson‘s speeches at the end of a conference dinner. To the great amusement of his audience he said that his secretary at the time said to him “Chris, you are so unreliable”. My experience was that Chris was very reliable – every time it really mattered. Thank you, Chris!

One “advantage” of age is that I have seen Masters come and go. Christopher Dobson was pre-eminent for his affability and willingness to communicate with every member of the College - whatever their vintage ! But he will be remembered by Johnians for his success in improving the reputation of the College - not only academically but also in sport, and, most of all, for the friendliness which now pervades college life. His successor will have to follow an esteemed predecessor.
John Palfrey, 1945 - 48
Chris Dobson was a wonderful Master of the College, and a good friend who gave me invaluable advice when I needed it. We will all miss him.
Sir Michael Scholar
A conversation with Sir Christopher never felt rushed. I always thought this as a sign of great, genuine generosity.
The Master and his wife's hospitality when they opened their house for concerts or other occasions was absolutely exceptional. A Johnian PhD, now Fellow of a College at 'the other university'.

Dear Frank,

Your message to the Vice-Chancellor has been forwarded to me. I wanted to write immediately to you to express my sincere condolences to all members of the College on the death of Chris.

With good wishes at this very difficult time,

Graham

It was Sir Christopher who re engaged me with the college between the years of 2012 and 2014. Not only did he invite me back to speak to the undergraduates, which I considered an honour, but then offered me a stay as a Fellow Commoner which was an enormous privilege. His authority was easy. His charm, open mindedness and generosity genuine. His interest in education and the lives and careers of those associated with the college, exceptional. He is one of those people you can't quite believe have gone. But in terms of his legacy to the college, I feel sure that he will continue to be present.
