We only knew Christopher when I met him a few times on Donor Day each year. We found him to be a warm person who was wonderfully centred on the welfare of the College and all its members. He seemed to us to be a man with a passion for making the best standards of education accessible to as many as possible, whatever their background, in pursuit of excellence and equality. We greatly admired these qualities, together with his gentle wit and humanity. Despite his achievements, he seemed to us to have no arrogance; rather he had the common touch. He will be greatly missed by the College as well as his family.
Dr Brian and Mrs Lynette Jacobs
I found such a welcoming and outward-looking atmosphere in the College during two lengthy stays in 2018 and 2019. I can only attribute this to a benign influence emanating from the Master. It's a legacy for the College to cherish.

My Cambridge experience would have been very different without Chris. During my first week at John's as a fresher I had the pleasure of visiting the Master's lodge and getting a tour of this incredible building by Chris himself. Chris wanted to share this space with us and bridge the gap between students and fellows. Throughout my years as an undergrad and then as a PhD student I spent so many evenings at BCDs, concerts at the Master's lodge and formal dinners in his company. I will always remember his witty speeches. He will be missed, both as an incredible Master and scientist. My thoughts are with his family.

My condolences to the family of an incredible academic, compassionate Master, and gifted room-cricketer.
George Bilclough 2012-16
Chris exhibited a wonderful combination of gentleness and kindness as a person and brilliance as a scientist and academic. The perfect person to be Master of St. John's. He will be missed by so many but his life was an example to us all.

Such a great loss to St John's and to Cambridge - Sir Christopher's efforts to make the college a more welcoming environment for each and every member of the College were making a great difference. He and Dr Dobson made me feel so accepted when I joined the college. My husband and I send our condolences to Dr Dobson and her family.
Dr Elena Giusti
My sincere sympathy to Lady Dobson and her family.

Such a loss to everyone who had the privilege of meeting Chris. St John's won't be the same without him - what an impact he has made since becoming Master. Codolences to all his family and friends.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Christopher. I remember a particularly inspiring evening with him at the Master's Lodge speaking about the Choir and books, and as his guest at High Table. I always found him humane and charming, with a deep passion for passing on learning and for St. John's activities in the world - which will be a poorer place without him. I send my deepest condolences to his wife Lady Mary, and to his sons and all his loved ones.
Dr. David Clive Price
Sir Christopher became Master the year I joined St. John's. I remember the wonderful concerts he would hold in the Master's Lodge, and one in particular where afterwards he gave me and a group of other graduate students a tour of some of the historic treasures of the Master's Lodge. One of many magical memories from my time at St. John's, and his kindness in taking the time for us stood out. My condolences to his family.
