Bookplate of Pierre-Daniel Huet (1630-1721)

Two volumes in the Library bear the bookplate of Pierre-Daniel Huet, scholar, scientist and Bishop of Avranches, whose attacks on the rationalism of Descartes made him a leading proponent of fideism. One of these is a work by Kepler; the other, illustrated here, is an edition of Petronius Arbiter's Satyricon (1629), given by Ralph Hare Griffin. A French account of the death of Shah Sulayman I (1696) given by Hugh Gatty also bears his arms in gilt on both covers.
