Generating Genius visits St John's

On 14th March 2013, St John’s welcomed a group of Year 12 students into College on a visit organised in conjunction with the charity Generating Genius (www.generatinggenius.org.uk). Generating Genius’s Uni Genius programme provides guidance to help gifted Londoners from disadvantaged backgrounds towards places at top universities. They collaborated with the St John's College Access Officer to arrange a day that involved introductory talks, a tour of College, and the chance to meet and ask questions of current undergraduate students.

All of the students who visited were highly motivated, and keen to take advantage of the opportunity. For several, misgivings about the idea of applying to Cambridge were dispelled. Group leader Gideon Woldeslassie commented that 'The highlight was a Q&A session with a panel of first and second-year undergraduate students. Many of them were state educated and exactly the right people to provide reassurance – and evidence – that students from all backgrounds thrive at the university.'
