Research interestsMy doctoral and post-doctoral work was very much concerned with developing the interpretative correspondences between Continental Philosophy (especially Adorno, Heidegger and Sartre) and aspects of musical modernism such as neo-avant-gardism, the ontology of the "new", creativity, and the technological. I’ve since switched my attention to the other side of the Atlantic and my current work is invested in the inferentialist semantics of Robert Brandom. In the light of this theory I am re-considering more fundamental aesthetic problems of emotional expression in music, the propositional content of compositional technique, and the relationship between word and music in song.
