'Rotuli Parliamentorum'. French, Latin and English, late 18th cent.

 

Eight volumes forming an incomplete set of transcripts from medieval parliament rolls, covering the reigns of Henry III, Edward I, Edward II, Edward III, Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI, i.e. 1260-1437. It is not known for whom the transcripts were made or, in most cases, the sources from which they were taken. A printed edition of the Rotuli Parliamentorum, covering the reigns of Edward I to Henry VII (i.e. 1278 to 1503) was published in London in six volumes in 1767-77.

Vol. 1: 390 x 260 mm. [1], 5, [39], 255, [3], 144, [6] p. Contains transcripts of close, patent and parliament rolls viz close rolls for 44 Henry III; 22, 33 Edward I; 3, 5, 19 Edward II; patent rolls for 47, 48 Henry III; parliament rolls for 5, 8, 9 Edward II. At the end of the volume appears 'Notes on my Lord the Earl of Clarendon's books' (2p).

Vol. 2: 390 x 260 mm. [4], 358, [6], 265, [1] p. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 5, 6, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 Edward III.

Vol. 3: 390 x 260 mm. Unpaginated. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 29, 36, 37, 38, 40, 42, 43, 45, 46, 47, 50, 51 Edward III.

Vol. 4: 390 x 260 mm. 219 folios, 220-282 p. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Richard II. A note at the end reads 'Copied from a MS of Lord Macclesfield'.

Vol. 6: 390 x 260 mm. Unpaginated. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 1, 2, 4, 5 Henry IV.

Vol. 9: 390 x 260 mm. Unpaginated. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 Henry V.

Vol. 10: 390 x 260 mm. Unpaginated. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 Henry VI. A note on the first page identifies the source as British Library Cotton Titus E V.

Vol. 11: 390 x 260 mm. Unpaginated. Contains transcripts of parliament rolls for 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 Henry VI.

Manuscript extra information

Half bindings of leather and grey/light blue paper over boards. Each volume bears a number in gilt on the spine. Paper with borders ruled in red; watermarks include fleur-de-lis, C & I Honig, IV, Strasburg Lily with J H & Zoon and beehive. Single neat and elegant hand of the late eighteenth century.

All eight volumes bear the bookplate of the 'Earl of Roden K. St. P.'. Vols 1-4 were 'bought from Thorp, 1928' (note inside vol. 1) and were given to the Library by Charles Previté-Orton (1877-1947) in 1928 (book label). Vols 6, 9, 10 and 11 appear to have been purchased from 'Whitaker 1928' and came to the Library from the collection of Herbert Somerton Foxwell (1849-1936) in 1936 (note inside vol. 6). Previously shelved under the class mark P16.1.
