Thomas Budd Shaw. Collection of writings in autograph manuscript (with a few printed items). English. Nineteenth century.

“Works in manuscript / by / Thomas Budd Shaw B.A. , M.A.  / of S. John’s College Cambridge / Born Oct 12 1813 / died in S. Petersburg Nov 26 1862 / Vol.1 / Collected and arranged by / his sister Julia Tufnell Hardwick / and her son Philip Charles Hardwick / April 1880.” -- from title page to volume 1.

Volume 1 is entirely manuscript, written in ink in a single hand on rectos only (apart from the additional 10 preliminary leaves, which  are in a different hand with pencil corrections and rough sketches, occasionally also on verso). Works in the volume include epilogues to plays performed at Shrewsbury School in 1833 and 1834, original poems by Shaw, and his translations of poetic works, many of which are dated variously from 1833 to 1851. Volume 2 is essentially a scrap book,  containing both manuscript extracts of poems and translations from the 1830s and 1840s and copies of small printed publications pasted in. Publications include an annotated copy of Theophrastus at Cambridge (Cambridge, 1836) inscribed ‘to Mrs P. Hardwick with the author’s love’, several issues of the periodical The individual, published in Cambridge in 1836-7, and an extract of pages 322-325 from Fraser’s magazine, volume 20, September 1839, containing the text of a poem ‘Basché’s wedding’.

Volume 2 is unnumbered with some leaves removed to create space for paste-ins, and some unused leaves.
