University Challenge trophy comes to St John’s after College team triumph

Television’s most coveted quizzing prize is on now display at St John’s after our student team won University Challenge for the first time.

The notoriously difficult programme is an intellectual quiz challenge which pitches the very brightest university students against each other.

Jeremy Paxman said “you were well-balanced, you were fast, you were great” after their semi-final performance

A team from St John’s College won the 47th series of the programme earlier this year with an unbroken winning streak, and even earned praise from quizmaster Jeremy Paxman who said “you were well-balanced, you were fast, you were great” after their semi-final performance.

The St John’s College name has now been engraved on the book-shaped trophy underneath last year’s winners Balliol College, Oxford, and is on display in the St John’s Library.

It will be returned to the BBC next year before it is passed onto the winners of the next series.

The team was made up of students James Devine-Stoneman, Rosie McKeown, John-Clark Levin and Matt Hazell, and reserve team member Aneesh Aggarwal. Read more about their performance and success.
