St John's Women's Society

2007 has been an important year for all the women at St John's College. Not only have we celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of women's entrance to St John's with an inspiring conference and wonderful dinner, but we also have a sense, stronger than ever, that College life, as well as society and life in general, would not be viable without women. It is unthinkable for us to emulate the St John's College scenario of twenty-five years ago before women were admitted. Quite frankly, it must have been boring and uninspiring!

This year, I am glad to announce the founding of the St John's College Women's Society. The Society is of course open to both women and men, and I have no doubt both will benefit from it. Its aim is to support women during their time at St John's in every aspect possible and to promote the indispensable representation of women at every level of the College hierarchy.

The Society will run from October 2007. For this academic year, we have scheduled a variety of activities of particular interest to female members of College, ranging from talks from high-profile women to networking events and help with aspects of everyday life.  We also hope to encourage interaction between women in St John's, at junior and senior levels, and to raise awareness of women's issues within the College and the University. We have also planned social activities, such as theatre and movie nights, and we will try to establish a yoga and/or aerobic weekly session exclusive to St John's College.

The society already has a wonderful committee in place, including JCR, SBR and Fellow members. However, being a new Society, we constantly need help with the running, and getting new ideas. So, please, do not hesitate to contact us, to get involved or with any question/concern you may have.

As a final message, I would like simply to remind all students at St John's that this is our College, and it is our right and our responsibility, to improve, change and at the same time, preserve our College in the best way possible. This is exactly what this Society seeks to do.
