St John's launches Indian Scholarships

St John's College announced a prestigious new scholarship programme this week in honour of Dr Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister. Dr Singh read Economics at St John's in the 1950s and was awarded an honorary doctorate last year.

The Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships have been established to bring outstanding Indian students to St John's College to read for postgraduate degrees in science, technology and social sciences. From 2008, the College will welcome students on a full scholarship covering the total cost of their time here (including fees, travel and living expenses), tenable for up to three years, to read for MPhils and PhDs.

This venture has been backed by major organizations such as the BP Foundation, Rolls-Royce India and the Tata Group. The British Council, a leader in administering scholarship programmes, will manage the application process.

The scheme was launched at the Prime Minister's residence in Delhi by Dr Manmohan Singh and the Master of St John's, Professor Chris Dobson. A number of local Johnians were in attendance, and they celebrated this historic occasion with an evening reception at the Prime Minister's residence.

The College looks forward to welcoming these students to Cambridge.

Further information on the programme will follow shortly. For details on how to apply for this scholarship, email: delhi.scholarship@in.britishcouncil.org.
