St John’s Fellow awarded Honorary Fellowship from institute for microwave technology research

St John’s Fellow Dr Ricky Metaxas has received an Honorary Fellowship from the International Microwave Power Institute (IMPI).

Dr Metaxas was awarded the honour after he gave an invited talk at the 50th annual International Microwave Power Institute Symposium in Orlando, Florida. He was presented with a commemorative plaque announcing his Honorary Fellowship of the IMPI, which was bestowed on him by the Board of Governors.

“I am very grateful to receive such an honour and accolade,” Ricky said.

The IMPI, founded in 1966, plays an important role in advancing the use of microwave and radio frequency (RF) energy. It is dedicated to the exchange of information on these technologies, and provides an international educational forum for people and organisations who study non-communications uses of microwave energy in food science, industry, research, and other disciplines.

Ricky became a Fellow at St John’s in 1987, when he was appointed Lecturer in Engineering, and was Director of Studies in Engineering from 1991 to 1995. He has co-authored over 200 publications in areas such as computational modeling, power, electromagnetics and electricity utilisation, including the book Industrial Microwave Heating, considered to be the Bible for researchers of microwave heating. He is Honorary President of AMPERE (Association for Microwave Power in Europe for Research and Education), which he co-founded and of which he was later President. He is the Managing Director of AC Metaxas and Associates, an energy consultancy that specialises in all aspects of the adoption of RF and microwave energies into the industrial sector. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2nd Global Congress on Microwave Applications in 2012.

Ricky Metaxas Pioneer AwardDr Metaxas also has an award named after him, the ‘Ricky Metaxas Pioneer Award’, which was bestowed to him by the organising committee of the World Congress on microwave and RF energy. The award is presented to a promising young researcher every four years, and this year, at the 3rd Global Congress of Microwave Energy Applications venue in Cartegena, Spain, it was presented to John Gerling, of MUEGGE gmbh, a leading international manufacturer and supplier of systems for advanced industrial microwave heating and plasma applications. Upon receiving the award, John said: “I want to express my deepest gratitude for having received such a prestigious award and I hope to live up to the honour in the years to come”.
