Round off Green Week in style!

This weekend marks the climax of St John’s College Green Week with a host of special events.

On Friday the Larmor Society is holding a talk with Professor Chris Howe, giving members of St John’s the opportunity to learn about how photosynthesis is the key to renewable energy conversion and take part in a lively discussion.  This is followed by a sustainable green super hall with a ‘heroes and super heroes’ theme, plus a bike trip on Sunday to beautiful Anglesey Abbey with a photo competition. Johnians can get involved in any or all of these activities, or try out one of the vegan meals being served daily in the Buttery as part of Green week’s vegan campaign.

Green Week is a student-run programme of events, activities and campaigns aimed at encouraging members of St Johns to think about energy reduction and how they can contribute to a more sustainable, greener future. So far activities have included local beer and cheese tasting and the screening of award-winning documentary Manufactured Landscapes, which follows the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky as he travels around China, looking at the effects of the country’s massive industrial revolution.

This year the College will donate 50% of any money saved from energy reduction to one of the top environmental charities - Friends of the Earth. An anonymous donor will double this provided the College reaches a minimum 3% saving. A 5% energy reduction would give £300 to Friends of the Earth from the College with an additional £300 from a donor. Anyone can make a difference by changing simple habits such as turning of their computer at night and switching off lights when they leave the room.
