'Castle of Angera', 1871

A room inside the castle at Angera
Watercolour on paper (R-Box 3/2)

Castle Angera, on the shore of Lago Maggiore in northern Italy, was the birthplace of San Carlo Borromeo. Butler visited it many times over a number of years, and later declared that he liked it 'better and better' with each visit. 'There is very little furniture inside the rooms, and the little there is is decaying; the walls are covered with pictures, mostly copies, and none of them of any great merit, but the rooms themselves are lovely' (Alps and Sanctuaries, chapter 23).
