Mystery shoppers from Visit England give four star Campus rating to St John’s

“It is important to have a set standard so guests know they will have an enjoyable and comfortable stay at St John’s."

Bed and breakfast accommodation at St John’s has received the highest possible accolade from Visit England for campus locations without on-site guest parking – for the third year.

The Visit England 4*Campus status is awarded to educational institutions that demonstrate high standards in their B&B guest accommodation.

Visit England was particularly impressed with the cleanliness of St John’s bed and breakfast rooms, the welcome from the Porters, the offers available to guests in the Bar and Buttery, and the standard of food, including catering for vegetarians, vegans, and people with allergies.

Bill Brogan with Visit England award

Bill Brogan, Catering Manager, arranged for the College to be involved in the Visit England award scheme, and St John’s was the first College in Cambridge to receive 4* Campus status.

He said: “It is important to have a set standard so guests know they will have an enjoyable and comfortable stay at St John’s. Booking a room overnight on a campus is not the same experience as staying in a hotel, but guests are still looking for high standards. At St John’s they get that whilst staying in a stunning, historic Cambridge College on the River Cam.”

Representatives from Visit England came to St John’s as ‘mystery shoppers’ and stayed overnight to assess the accommodation and guest experience.

Assessment criteria include the standard of rooms and bathrooms, cleanliness, service and hospitality, guest meals, and public areas. As the College does not provide parking for guests it cannot receive 5* Campus status, the highest accolade.
