CARTULARY OF THE HOSPITAL OF ST MARY
Cartulary of the Hospital of St Mary of Ospringe, Kent. Latin, late 13th century.
The Maison Dieu at Ospringe, Kent, was endowed by Henry III in 1234. It was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1516 and its property transferred to the nascent St John's College, Cambridge through the offices of Bishop John Fisher.
Physical description
Vellum. 275 x 185mm. vi, 66 folios. Folios 63-66 are damaged with some textual loss. Collation: 6 preliminary leaves, 112-512 66. Written in good charter hands of the late 13th century, with a few 15th-century marginal notes from folio 59r. Binding: gold-tooled straight-grained red goatskin over boards; gold-tooled spine, board edges and inside edges; marbled endpapers; gilt lettering on spine reads 'Cartulary of S. Mary's Hospital Ospringe', 'Bound 1869'.
Contents
On folio i verso is a note of tenants at Monketon in 31 Edward I (i.e. 1302-3) and another memorandum dated 19 Edward II (i.e. 1325-6). Folios ii-iv contain a list of the charters (148) with a note of the folio on which each appears. Folios v and vi are blank. The text of the charters runs from folios 1 to 66, the first being of William de Becco.

The last charter is followed by a memorandum dated 1275 of an agreement between Thomas prior of Christ Church, Canterbury and William master of the Maison Dieu, Ospringe. This ends imperfectly on folio 66v.
