Choral Foundation Campaign Launched

At a reception following the Choir's performance of Haydn's Creation at St John's, Smith Square, the College launched a Campaign to raise £5 million for a Choral Foundation in support of the Choir. The Master, Professor Chris Dobson, and impresario David Pountney (1966) spoke to invited guests who included performers, Johnians and prominent musicians and supporters of the Choir. Professor Dobson explained that the Choir has no separate endowment of its own and competes for funding with the College's other activities, and David Pountney spoke compellingly about his time as a chorister under George Guest and the profound and positive influence it had on his life and subsequent career. Both stressed the importance of the Choir to the College and the wider world and urged those who love the Choir to support the Campaign.

The Choir sang with Britten Sinfonia and soloists who included former Choral Scholar, Allan Clayton (2000). It was conducted by Director of Music Andrew Nethsingha. This was the first of two Quincentenary Concerts sponsored by Dr Kamal Ahuja (1977), Scientific and Managing Director of the London Women's Clinic.
