Illustrations for 'Alps and Sanctuaries' (c.1880-81)

Here is a small selection of Butler’s original drawings, or ‘studies taken upon the spot’, which he produced to illustrate the various chapters in Alps and Sanctuaries. In each case the medium is pen and ink and gouache on card. All the figures were added by Butler’s artist-friend, Charles Gogin.

Carlo Borromeo was Bishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584. He instigated the completion of the Sacro Monte at Varallo-Sesia.
