Race and injustice in Plato’s ‘Republic’ to be explored in Newell Classical Event 2025
US academic to give annual public lecture celebrating the world of Classics
Race and injustice are the topics of this year’s Newell Classical Event 2025 public lecture at St John’s College.
Professor Jackie Murray, Associate Professor of Classics at The State University of New York at Buffalo, will deliver the talk entitled From Kallipolis to Timocracy: Race and Injustice in Plato’s ‘Republic’.
The Newell Classical Event, which celebrates the classical world, will take place at 7.15pm on Thursday 22 May at St John’s College. All are very welcome.
Professor Murray’s publications are in Hellenistic and Latin poetry, race and ethnicity in antiquity, black classicisms, and the reception of Classics in African American and Afro-Caribbean literature.
The annual Newell Classical Event was established in 2015 following a generous bequest from a Johnian. The aim is to celebrate all that is exciting, creative and forward-thinking in the world of Classics, and bring it to the attention of a wide public.
This year’s event will take place in the Palmerston Room in the Fisher Building at St John’s College. Members of the public are welcome and booking is not required.
