Annotated copy of the 'Origin of Species' (1872)

Annotated pages in Butler's copy of the book

(BV D2)

This is Butler’s copy of the sixth edition Origin of Species. Published in 1872, the book contained Darwin’s extensive revisions, and an entire new chapter addressing St George Mivart’s objections to natural selection.

Butler bought this copy in 1876, in order to compare it with the first edition. The extensive and detailed annotations found throughout this volume are in Butler’s hand, and express the thinking that crystallized into his first book on evolution, Life and Habit.
