St John's student to take part in masterclass with world-renowned pianist

Second-year history student and cellist Ghislaine McMullin is to take part in a musical masterclass along with distinguished pianist Angela Hewitt on 25 April, in the West Road Concert Hall.

Angela Hewitt, one of the world’s leading pianists, is the 2014 Humanitas Visiting Professor of Chamber Music for the University. In a series of recitals and lectures, she is set to tackle one of Bach’s most brilliant works: The Art of Fugue, a work so challenging that it is rarely performed live.

Ms Hewitt is to give a lecture-recital on 24 April, conduct a masterclass with talented student musicians on 25 April and take part in a public discussion on 28 April. All three events will take place in the West Road Concert Hall, and are free to attend and open to all.

They will be followed by a concluding concert on 29 April, in which Angela Hewitt is to perform The Art of Fugue. Tickets for this concert cost £20 (£5 for students) and can be booked via the Cambridge Corn Exchange.

Ghislaine McMullin will be playing cello in the student masterclass along with her ensemble, The Arbury Trio, who will be performing Beethoven’s Ghost Trio. She said: “This masterclass is a fantastic opportunity; not only do we have the chance to perform in a lovely venue, we also are able to work with Angela Hewitt, a musician of the highest calibre. We have spent all term learning the Beethoven, and we are all incredibly excited to hear her thoughts and insights into our performance.”

Professor John Rink, Fellow of St John’s, said: “Angela Hewitt is one of today’s foremost performers of Bach, and we are thrilled that she will be sharing her unique artistic insight here at Cambridge.”
