Linacre Lecture 2014

The annual Linacre Lecture will take place on Monday 5 May in the Divinity School, St John’s College, and is entitled “Molecular Chaperones – Guardians of the Proteome”. The lecture will be given by Professor Dr Franz-Ulrich Hartl, Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Martinsried, Germany.

Frank-Ulrich Hartl has received several awards for his research, including the Shaw Prize in Life Sciences and Medicine, and the Körber Prize for European Science. Research work at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry focuses on the investigation of the structure of proteins, how cancer evolves, and how complete biological systems function.

The Linacre Lecture was established in 1524 by a benefaction from Thomas Linacre, first President of the Royal College of Physicians and physician to Henry VIII. The annual lectures are given by a leading research scientist in the general field of medicine, and previous Linacre Lectures at St John's College include 'New Approaches to Understanding and Preventing Neurodegenerative Diseases', presented by Professor Chris Dobson, and 'Improving the Health of the World', delivered by Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz.

This year's lecture will be held at 5pm on 5 May in the Main Lecture Theatre in the Divinity School, and will be preceded with tea at 4.15pm in the Central Hall. Parking is available on the College’s playing fields, off Queen's Road, and the gates will remain open until 8.30pm.

All members of the University are warmly invited to attend.
