Robert Jenkin, 'De Potestate Ecclesiastica'. Latin, 1711

 

Robert Jenkin (1656-the author's hand1727), Master of St John's College, and Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge: 'De Potestate Ecclesiastica', a development of his inaugural lecture as Lady Margaret Professor, delivered on 3 May 1711. The work is in nine chapters. An 'index', or rather a chapter by chapter synopsis in the author's hand, is at fos viii r - x v. This MS is listed eighth among Jenkin's publications in the old DNB article.

Inside front cover, in the donor's hand: 'Coll: Divi Johan Cantab Feb 1 1754 Ex donatione Reverendi Viri Tho: Jenkin, Hujus Collegii olim Socii' (Thomas Jenkin, d. 1756, Robert's nephew). At fo. i v, in the same hand: 'Jan 28 1754. Hoc Opus, in Ecclesiae Catholicae, sed almae Matris Filiorum praecipue usum, a Viro admodum Reverendo Roberto Jenkin, Sanctae Theol. Pro Domina Margareta Professore, elaboratum, Celeberrimo Divi Johannis Collegio (cui Dignissimus Ipse nuper Praefectus sua omnia accepta referre gloriabatur) grato animo, et qua par est pietate, conservandum dat, consecratque Thomas Jenkin non ita pridem Collegii eiusdem Socius. His tamen reservatis conditionibus, ut nemini sane istius vel imprimendi, vel interpretandi, permittatur licentia, nisi concessu prius impetrato a praedicto Thomas Jenkin, aut ab eius Haeredibus, Haeredibusve eorum, quicunque fuerint superstites; Quin et Ipsorum cuicunque, ad imprimendum meditanti, aditus et usus eiusdem pateat.'

Autograph throughout, written on the recto with notes and additions on the facing verso. Paper. Quarter leather with marbled paper on boards, repaired by David English of Messrs Gray, Dec. 1972 (inscription on final folio).
