Jeremiah Holt (fl. 1596-1644)

Jeremiah Holt gained his BA from St John's in 1599/1600, his MA in 1603 (in which year he also become a Fellow), and his BD in 1610. He was incorporated at Oxford in 1608. He was successively rector of Horton in Buckinghamshire, Stonham Aspal in Suffolk (from which he was ejected in 1644), and Thurlton in Norfolk. He is recorded as dying on the 27th November, but the year of his death is unknown.

Holt's gift to the Library

Over forty items in the Library appear to have come from Holt. They bear a book label dated 1634, when he was Rector of Stonham Aspal. The items are chiefly theological in nature.

Provenance markings

The books given by Holt bear a book label detailing his gift. Translated it reads:

Jeremiah Holt Batchelor of Sacred Theology, Rector of the church of Stonham Aspal in the county of Suffolk, and sometime Fellow of this College, busily promoted the study of arts and languages among his fellow Johnians; later he transferred to this place, from his own private library, several books of better note, some printed, regarding in particular the holy language, others in manuscript, and he wished 20 pounds to be spent on obtaining others. In the year 1634.
