Dr Jian Yang awarded Fok Ying Tung Foundation Prize

Dr Jian Yang, a visiting Chinese scholar at St John’s College, has been awarded the First Prize of the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation for Outstanding Young Teachers of Higher Education, one of the most recognised prizes for young scholars in China.

The prize, awarded every two years, is normally presented to outstanding young teachers engaged in research in science and technology; however, on this occasion, Dr Jian Yang received the prize in recognition of his work in the arts and humanities, partly carried out at St John’s and at the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge.

Recently, Dr Yang identified a music book in St John’s College Library as being an exceptionally rare document of early Chinese music, and this unique volume of pre-modern Gongche notation could contribute greatly to the research and performance of Chinese traditional music.
