Finances

As a graduate student you will need to obtain funding to cover the costs of your course. Before your admission to the University and College can be confirmed you will need to provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover these costs.

The cost of a graduate course comprises fees (both University and College) and living costs. Research Councils, the AHRC and Cambridge Trusts offer sources of funding for graduates, as do College Scholarships and Studentships.

University Fees

Estimated University fees for the academic year 2012/13 are between £3,807 and £31,494 per annum depending on type of course and fee status:-

Home Student£3,807
EU/Exchange Student£3,807
Overseas Student reading an Arts subject£13,011
Overseas Student reading a Science Subject£17,028
Overseas Student reading Clinical Medicine£31,494

N.B.  Those on a Premium Rate M.Phil. course will pay higher fees.  (Full details about all University Fees can be found in the Fees and Funding section of the website of the Board of Graduate Studies from which the above figures were taken http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/)

College Fee

The College Fee (including the compulsory Student Union Fee) for the academic year 2011/12 is £2,289 per annum for a graduate student.
(N.B. Students reading for the Master of Advanced Study are charged at the Undergraduate College fee rate).
The College Fee for 2012/13 will be announced in the summer of 2012.

Living Costs

Living costs (also known as Maintenance) include the costs of accommodation and services in College and the more general costs of purchasing food, books, etc.

The Board of Graduate Studies provide estimated figures for the minimum expected Maintenance/Living Costs.  These figures depend on the type of course and fee status.*  The estimated minimum figure for a 12 month course for the academic year 2012/13 is £11,250.  This figure is reduced pro rata for courses of less than 12 months.

Full details (including additional costs if you are accompanied to Cambridge by dependants) can be viewed on the website of the Board of Graduate Studies from which the above figures are taken:- http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/

Included in these estimated Maintenance/Living Costs are the college charges for rooms and service in college. For the academic year 2011/12 the charges at St. John’s are:-

Rooms and service in College : £4,026-6,675 per annum (52 weeks)

Kitchen Fixed Charge : A maximum of £506 per annum

*Before Graduate Students are admitted to the University the Board of Graduate Studies requires them to provide evidence that they have sufficient funds to cover both fees and maintenance for the duration of their course. Their figure for maintenance is deliberately set low so as not to unnecessarily restrict access and should be regarded as an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. It is strongly recommended that a graduate student has an extra £500 per year in order to maintain a reasonable standard of living.
