Joanna Odrowąż-Sypniewska is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Analytic Philosophy at the University of Warsaw. She is also President of the Committee of Philosophical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She received her MLitt and PhD from the University of St Andrews and a PhD from the University of Warsaw. She has led several research projects funded by the Polish National Science Centre and was a Fulbright Senior Advanced Research Award holder at Yale. She has undertaken research visits at the University of St Andrews and the University of Barcelona.
Joanna’s research is primarily in the philosophy of language, with particular interests in assertion, lying and misleading, speaker commitment and deniability, as well as vagueness and disagreement. Her current work examines what speakers commit themselves to when they communicate, including cases in which what they convey goes beyond the literal meaning of their words. She is particularly interested in how these commitments differ between cooperative conversations and more strategic or adversarial exchanges. This research has implications for broader questions about responsibility in communication, testimony, and the distinction between lying and misleading.
