After an undergraduate degree in Business, Daniel Machiela took an MA in Bible and ancient Judaism from Jerusalem University College (2000) and a PhD in Theology from the University of Notre Dame (2007). He was a faculty member in the Department of Religious Studies at McMaster University from 2008 until 2022, at which time he took up a position in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He has spent considerable research stints in Israel, at the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research and the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem, and in Germany, at the universities of Göttingen and Munich.
Professor Machiela has broad research and teaching interests ranging across the Bible and ancient Judaism, with special emphases on the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient Jewish biblical interpretation, and the Aramaic language. The majority of his publications have focused on the the Dead Sea Scrolls written in Aramaic. He is currently writing an introduction to these scrolls and a commentary on a work called the Genesis Apocryphon, which creatively rewrote parts of the biblical book of Genesis in Aramaic.
