Matthew H Johnson, Kenneth F Burgess Professor, Professor of Anthropology Northwestern University

Professor Johnson is an archaeologist of the medieval and early modern worlds. He has held visiting fellowships at UC-Berkeley, Heidelberg, UCLA, Flinders, Cambridge, and the University of Pennsylvania. After a MA and PhD at St John's and posts at Sheffield, Durham and Southampton, he moved across the Atlantic in 2011 to be Professor, sometime Chair of Anthropology and then Associate Dean of Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University. He has written six books on archaeology, buildings and landscape. He most recently worked in the field at Bodiam Castle, Sussex.

Professor Johnson is writing a book on buildings and landscape of the English in their northern Atlantic context, 1000-1800CE. His interests range across theory, interdisciplinary approaches, and the cultural context of archaeology.
