Originally from Brazil, Dr. Oliveira Vale obtained degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Chicago, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University.
He holds a Certificate of College Teaching Preparation from Yale University. Over ten years, at the University of Chicago and at Yale, he has served as a teaching assistant for core Computer Science courses, and as head teaching assistant for several of them, coordinating course logistics, assessment and staff.
His research lies at the intersection of semantics, verification and the theory of concurrent and distributed systems, and is centred on the notion of compositionality: the principle that components verified independently can be combined while preserving their correctness. Concurrent and distributed systems are notoriously difficult to verify, because their behaviour emerges from the interaction of independent components. Compositional methods are a promising approach to making their verification scale. He approaches this problem from a foundational perspective that seeks both to address the practical problem of verifying large heterogeneous systems and to explore deeper questions about the meaning of computation.
