Sunday Evensong Sermon Series

WHAT IS TRUTH?

In a world struggling to see clearly through conspiracy and fake news, seeking truth is more urgent than ever. In this sermon series, we will use the question posed to Jesus by Pontius Pilate to explore what truth really is, how we might find it, and what it means for how we live.

Preacher: Professor Alexander Bird, Bertrand Russell Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge University and a Fellow of St John’s College

Prior to coming to Cambridge, Alexander Bird was the Peter Sowerby Professor of Philosophy and Medicine at King's College London and Director of the Sowerby Philosophy & Medicine project.

Previously he held the chair in Philosophy at the University of Bristol, and was lecturer and then reader at the University of Edinburgh before that. He has also held visiting positions at Dartmouth College, Saint Louis University, Monash University, and the Università degli studi di Bergamo, and has been a visiting fellow at Exeter College, Oxford and at All Souls College, Oxford.

He is an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Oxford and a member (correspondant) of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques (Institut de France). Professor Bird's research covers topics in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, history and philosophy of medicine. His research is motivated by an opposition to empiricism in metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of science.
