Varallo (1885)

Oil painting showing Varallo viewed from across the water
Oil on canvas (I/Pictures/108)

This painting is one of 34 oils by Samuel Butler owned by St John’s. It hangs in the Graduates’ Common Room, which is aptly named the ‘Samuel Butler Room’.

Varallo lies in the valley of the Sesia, in the province of Vercelli, surrounded by the foothills of the Alps. Situated 150m above the town is the Sacro Monte di Varallo, the oldest of the pilgrimage sites in the Piedmont and Lombardy region.
