Tabachetti’s 'Journey to Calvary'

Digital reproduction made from a scan of Butler’s original glass negative

Tabachetti is the Italian name for the Flemish artist Jean de Wespin. Housed inside the 36th chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varallo, the Journey to Calvary consists of about 40 sculpted figures of men, women and children, and nine horses, all life-size.

‘This,’ Butler declared, ‘having regard to the terra-cotta figures alone, is by far the finest work on the Sacro Monte, and it is hardly too much to say that no one who has not seen it knows what sculpture can do.’ Butler’s painstaking photographic work, reproduced in Ex Voto, did much to generate interest in the Sacro Monte di Varallo and its artists.
