Dr Macintosh honoured with Festschrift

Dr Andrew Macintosh, Fellow and former Dean of St John’s College, was presented with a Festschrift at a dinner in the Wordsworth Room on Friday 10 January. The Festschrift, entitled Leshon Limmudim, includes over twenty essays by Dr Macintosh’s former students and colleagues covering various aspects of classical Hebrew language and literature.

Dr Macintosh first came up to St John’s in 1956 to read for a BA in Theology. Ever since, he has contributed greatly to the life and work of the College, firstly as a student and later as Chaplain, Dean, President and Fellow. Dr Macintosh’s academic interests focus on Hebrew language and scripture. His most well-known work is his learned commentary on the book of Hosea, which contains some of the most challenging Hebrew in the Old Testament.

To be presented with a Festschrift is a great honour and one which justly celebrates Dr Macintosh’s contribution to Hebrew scholarship as both a dedicated scholar and an inspiring teacher. The Hebrew title of the Festschrift, Leshon Limmudim, translated from Isaiah as ‘the tongue of the teacher’ or ‘tongue of the learned’, captures a sense of Dr Macintosh’s life as a scholar and teacher.
