St John’s Law student wins multiple prizes for academic achievement

Student Jarret Huang has received multiple prizes over the course of his studies at St John’s.

Jarret Huang, a student at St John’s who has just received a starred First in the final year of his Law degree, has also graduated with a collection of prizes won during his degree course, reflecting a number of excellent academic performances during his undergraduate studies.

Jarret was born in Singapore, and attended Raffles Junior College, a sixth-form equivalent state school, where he took A levels in History, Economics, Literature and Mathematics before coming to the UK to study Law at Cambridge. “I picked Law because I wanted the intellectual rigour of sound legal analysis, dovetailing with a  framework which recognises the social and human aspects of justice and how law permeates all areas of life,” he said.

During his first year, Jarret was the joint winner of the George Long Prize for Civil Law (Roman law), and in 2014 also received the George Long Prize in Civil Law II. Both of these prizes, which are awarded annually by the University, recognise outstanding performances in the Law Tripos. This year, Jarret also shared the University’s Clifford Chance Prize for European Union Law with two other students, after again producing an excellent exam script.

In addition to these University prizes, Jarret this year received a College Master’s Prize, which is awarded annually to St John’s students for an independent research paper on a subject of their choice. Jarret’s work discussed legal history, and how modern economics might be applied to it.

Apart from his passion for Law, Jarret also said that he chose to apply to St John’s because of the physical setting and the nature of the College community. “It’s a thoroughly beautiful College, and it never gets old walking around the architecture and surroundings,” he said. “Also, the people you get to meet are diverse and thoroughly interesting, and make for a more holistic university experience. I had also heard that the food was brilliant – and can certainly testify to that now!”

Jarret will soon be heading to Harvard to read for his Master’s in Law (LLM) before returning to Singapore to work in the Legal Service.
