Rowers in red make history in the University IVs

In a sweeping series of victories, four crews from the Lady Margaret Boat Club have won their races in the annual University IVs Competition, a feat that has never-before been achieved by the club.

Both the women’s and the men’s first and second boats for the rowing club of St John’s College won their races in the 2016 University IVs race.

The University IVs is a knock-out regatta for boats made up of four rowers and takes place every year in the middle of the Michaelmas Term.

In each round of races two racing crews start at the same time, 120m apart, and are timed chasing one another to their respective finishes also separated by 120m.

The Lady Margaret Boat Club entered five coxed boats of four - three from the men, and two from the women.

The women’s first boat (W1) won, beating Downing W1 in the final; the women’s second boat (W2) won, beating Downing W2 in the final; the men’s first boat (M1) won, beating St. Catharine's M1 in the final and the men’s second boat (M2) also won, beating Queens' M2 in the final.

The men’s third boat (M3) also made a valiant effort, just losing out to Queens' M2 in the semi-finals.
