G.M. Garrett, Presentation Book. English, 1895.

[George Mursell Garrett (1834-1897)]: manuscript book, containing a list of subscribers. Entitled “Presentation to George Mursell Garrett, M.A. Mus.D., in the Combination Room of St John’s College, Cambridge, on the Fiftieth Anniversary of the commencement of his Musical Career, made on behalf of the Subscribers by the Vice-Chancellor of the University. 28th January, 1895.” Also contains a loose-leaf typescript ticket, admitting the bearer to a course of three lectures on the subject of “Counterpoint”, that were delivered by Garrett at the Royal College of Organists in March 1895; and an undated black-and-white miniature photograph of a man sitting on a bench. Garrett was Director of Music at St John’s College, 1857-1897.

Gold-tooled, red leather-backed boards: gold-tooled coat of arms for the University of Cambridge on front board, gold-tooled acheivement for St John’s College on back board. Includes College bookplate on inside front board. Given by Professor David McMullen, 2003. This book was kept in a private library between 1972-1988 and was returned to Cambridge in 1990.
