Manuscript description

Illustration accompanying a rubric setting forth indulgences granted by Pope John XXII etc. The illustration depicts a wounded hand emerging from a cloud, holding a crown of thorns, with a rosary of twelve beads hanging from it. The top bead is labelled Pater noster and the bottom one Credo. The ten beads in between are all marked Ave.The two lines written either side of the rosary read Adde Iesus fine quotiens tu dixeris ave, Bis triginta dies inertes tibi fiant (Add Jesus at the end each time you say the Ave Maria, and you will have sixty days off). From f.45v of MS E.24, a theological miscellany (14th century).
